Native. 2011. Installation at Tahoe Gallery, Sierra Nevada College, Incline Village, NV. Silkscreen on chipboard, hand-macrame, neon yellow dyed cotton net, hand-woven cotton basket. Net 20' x 20'. Basket 2' x 2' x 3'. Native is an installation exploring issues related to the hand(craft), the physicality of labor, and cultural and collective mythology. Commenting specifically on the handicraft of Native American artist, Datsolalee, Mutchler has reconstructed a contemporary degikup-style basket, using modern-day methods and materials, that rests below a myriad of stars. Silkscreen techniques were used to print on several hundred chipboard substrates that have been cut, scored and folded into a multitude of objects representing the night sky. The sky hangs, trapped, in neon yellow, handmade macramé cotton net.
